Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Jan 20 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Odisha Assembly and president of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Naveen Patnaik, expressed profound sorrow on Tuesday over the recent murder of a youth from a minority community amid allegations of illegal cattle smuggling in the Balasore district.
During a gathering of senior party officials at Naveen Niwas, Patnaik conveyed his dismay. Acting on his directive, a group of party leaders visited Balasore to investigate the alleged murder of Seikh Makarand Muhamad, who was from Astia village, under the jurisdiction of Balasore Sadar police.
Speaking to reporters, senior BJD figure Sanjay Das Burma remarked that such a horrific event had not taken place in the usually peaceful state of Odisha since independence.
“The BJD president has conveyed his utmost distress regarding the incident. Following his instructions, a high-level team led by MP Sulata Deo, alongside senior leader and former minister Prafulla Samal, and chairperson of Bhadrak Municipality Gulmaki Habib, visited the home of the deceased, Muhamad, in Balasore to meet with his family and local police officials,” Das Burma noted.
He asserted that the murder of the minority youth exemplifies the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state and the increasing violence against minorities since the double-engine government took over.
Das Burma added that the regional party has condemned the Balasore incident in the strongest possible terms, stating that the BJD supremo sought comprehensive information regarding the event.
Meanwhile, Bhakta Charan Das, the president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), criticized the state government, claiming that violence against minorities, Dalits, and tribals has risen since the BJP came to power.
According to the family of the victim, who worked as a helper for a pickup van, he suffered severe injuries after being assaulted by cow vigilantes on January 14. Local police arrived at the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
