Bhubaneswar, January 15 (NationPress) In a significant turn of events, the head of the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Naveen Patnaik, announced on Thursday the suspension of Patkura MLA Arvind Mohapatra and Champua MLA Sanatan Mahakud due to their purported involvement in anti-party activities.
"Shri Arvind Mohapatra, MLA and Shri Sanatan Mahakud, MLA are hereby suspended from Biju Janata Dal with immediate effect for their involvement in anti-party activities," a statement released on Thursday stated.
After a meeting between the party leader and several BJD MLAs, senior party member and Kendrapara MLA Ganeswar Behera informed the press, "We were made aware of the suspension of the two MLAs during the meeting. Upon inquiry, the party president indicated that their actions were detrimental to the party's interests, and the party could no longer remain silent. The party must continue its work, and I have taken this action."
He further explained that the party took this decision based on intelligence reports received by party leader Patnaik.
Meanwhile, Mohapatra, the son of former minister and senior leader Bijoy Mohapatra, who represents the Patkura constituency in Kendrapara district, refuted any allegations of being involved in anti-party activities.
"I just found out about my suspension from social media. I am unaware of the reasons behind this decision. I am not engaged in any anti-party activities and have been involved in party work in my constituency," stated Mohapatra.
He also asserted that he has no affiliations with any factions within the party and has not made any statements that could tarnish the party's reputation. He mentioned that he would discuss this matter with party leader Patnaik before addressing the media.
It is important to note that senior BJD leader Mahakud, who represents the Champua constituency in Keonjhar district, has recently criticized his party, claiming that the district has been overlooked by the BJD during its 24 years of governance.
Following the demise of senior BJD leader Rajendra Dholkia last year, the party's strength in the Odisha Assembly decreased to 50, and with the suspension of these two MLAs on Thursday, the count has now dwindled to 48.
