Why is the Sister of Navy Veteran Purnendu Tiwary Urging PM Modi for His Release from a Qatar Jail?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 2 (NationPress) In a poignant appeal, Dr Meetu Bhargava, sibling of retired Indian Navy Commander Purnendu Tiwary, has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to take immediate action regarding her brother's predicament.
Tiwary, hailing from Gwalior, is one of the eight former Navy officers who received a pardon from Qatar's Emir nearly two years ago.
Despite this, he continues to be held in Doha, embroiled in a new legal situation, raising fresh worries about his health and India's diplomatic maneuvers.
At the age of 65, Tiwary was among those detained in August 2022 under espionage allegations while employed by a private company in Qatar.
Initially handed a death sentence, their penalties were later reduced to imprisonment by Qatar's Court of Appeal in December 2023, allowing them 60 days to file an appeal.
In February 2024, seven officers successfully returned to India thanks to a royal pardon, a development attributed to PM Modi's direct involvement, as noted by Bhargava.
However, Tiwary remained behind due to a travel ban associated with financial irregularities at his workplace, Dahra Global Technologies.
In a recent post on X dated December 30, Bhargava revealed that Tiwary has been unfairly entangled in a secondary case that has led to a six-year sentence for criminal conspiracy and money laundering. He has spent the last month in jail, facing what she describes as “severe ignominy,” despite his distinguished service and being a recipient of the President's Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award.
Bhargava criticizes the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for their lack of action, alleging they neglected to review the case details, worsening her brother’s ordeal.
Tiwary's health is reportedly deteriorating, with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) from extended solitary confinement posing significant risks to his life.
Additionally, Bhargava has reached out to the Chief of Naval Staff, noting the Navy's silence regarding the situation of a retired officer, and has urged the community to advocate for his release.
Recent reports have indicated Tiwary's re-arrest and conviction, with potential deportation following his sentence.
“It is ironic that despite such injustice faced by their esteemed Naval officer, no visible actions have been taken by the Indian Navy's top brass to secure the release of their retired officer, Cdr Purnendu Tiwary, from the Doha jail,” she stated on her X account.
The MEA has yet to provide any updates on his situation, even with ongoing diplomatic relations with Qatar, including the Emir's visit to India in 2025. Currently, neither the PMO nor the MEA has made any public statements.
