Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 9 (NationPress) The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday that the Indian Embassy in Doha is offering all necessary consular assistance to naval veteran Purnendu Tiwary, who was taken into custody in December last year in an ongoing case in Qatar.
During a media briefing in New Delhi on Friday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that Tiwary's arrest followed a court ruling and emphasized that the matter remains sub judice.
"He was apprehended last month in a case that has persisted in Qatar for an extended period. According to our information, in addition to him, several others have been arrested, but they are not Indian citizens; they belong to other nationalities," Jaiswal mentioned.
"Our embassy maintains contact with Commander Tiwary and his family, offering all necessary consular assistance. This arrest was made following a court ruling. As this matter is currently sub judice, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further on the issue," he added.
Retired Indian Navy Commander Purnendu Tiwary, hailing from Gwalior, is among the eight former Navy officers who were pardoned by the Emir of Qatar nearly two years ago. He continues to be imprisoned in Doha amid a new legal predicament, raising fresh concerns regarding his health and India's diplomatic endeavors.
Tiwary, aged 65, was among the veterans detained in August 2022 on espionage allegations while employed by a private firm in Qatar.
Initially sentenced to death, their sentences were reduced to prison terms by Qatar's Court of Appeal in December 2023, providing them with 60 days to file an appeal.
In February 2024, seven officers returned to India following a royal pardon. However, Tiwary remained behind due to a travel ban related to financial irregularities at his workplace, Dahra Global Technologies.
Commander Tiwary's sister, Meetu Bhargava, has urgently called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar to intervene in her brother's case.
In a recent post on X from December 30, 2025, Bhargava stated that Tiwary has been "dragged" into a supplementary case fabricated from the original, leading to a six-year sentence for criminal conspiracy and money laundering. He has been incarcerated for the past month, enduring what she describes as "severe ignominy" despite his distinguished service and receipt of the President's Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award.
Tiwary's health has alarmingly deteriorated, with hypertension, diabetes, and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) due to prolonged solitary confinement posing life-threatening risks, reports indicate.
Bhargava has also urged the Chief of Naval Staff, calling on the defense community to unite for his release.
