New Delhi, Sep 29 (NationPress) The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) received a significant boost when the Special NDPS Court in Bareilly imposed a 12-year sentence of rigorous imprisonment on a drug trafficker, alongside a fine of Rs 1 lakh, in an opium recovery case, as stated by an official.
The NCB's Lucknow Zonal Unit, acting on precise intelligence, apprehended Satish Kumar while he was in possession of 4 kg of opium in Bareilly on March 2, 2024, according to the official statement.
On September 26, the Special Judge (NDPS) in Bareilly delivered a verdict sentencing Satish Kumar after convicting him under Sections 08/18/29 of the NDPS Act, 1985, the official reported.
Following Kumar's arrest, a comprehensive investigation was launched, leading to a formal complaint being submitted to the court on August 17, 2024. The trial included the testimony of five prosecution witnesses, ultimately resulting in the conviction.
The official emphasized that this prosecution marks a critical achievement in the Bureau’s ongoing battle against drug trafficking and reinforces the NCB's dedication to protecting society from the dangers of narcotics.
It also underscores the effective collaboration among intelligence operations, legal teams, and inter-agency support, as highlighted in the statement.
Earlier this month, a combined effort by the Assam Rifles and the NCB led to the capture of two drug dealers and the seizure of narcotics valued at approximately Rs 53.8 crore in the Chandel district of Manipur.
A Defence spokesperson noted that the anti-drug operation on September 26 was initiated following targeted intelligence inputs.
Swiftly acting on this information, a mobile vehicle checkpoint was set up in the Bala Point area of Chandel district, which borders Myanmar.
During surveillance, a white Gypsy and a motorcycle were seen approaching the checkpoint.
However, both vehicles stopped about 60 to 70 meters from the post, and the occupants abandoned their vehicles, attempting to escape into the nearby forest, the spokesperson reported.
The search team immediately pursued, carrying out an extensive sweep of the area.
After determined efforts, a team of 22 personnel from the Assam Rifles and the NCB succeeded in apprehending both suspects.
A thorough examination of the vehicles and individuals resulted in the recovery of 67.26 kg of highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, estimated to be worth Rs 53.8 crore.
The spokesperson confirmed that the seized drugs and the detained individuals were subsequently handed over to the Narcotics Control Bureau for further investigation and legal action.
