Ranchi, Sep 16 (NationPress) The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has labeled the demise of Jharkhand tribal leader Surya Hansda during a police encounter in Godda district as “suspicious” and has called for a CBI investigation into the matter.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Deepak Prakash disclosed the commission’s findings during a press conference held here on Tuesday, revealing that the NCST’s investigative team had recently visited the site of the encounter in Boarijor to gather statements from involved parties before directing its report to the Union Home Secretary and the Jharkhand Chief Secretary.
The commission pointed out that despite Hansda's arrest being documented on August 9, he was neither presented before a magistrate nor released within 24 hours, constituting a violation of legal standards.
Moreover, the report indicated that Hansda was reportedly subjected to torture prior to being shot.
The NCST has urged for a thorough CBI inquiry, the provision of security for Surya Hansda's family, and the immediate transfer of the officers involved in the encounter.
In a communication to the state government, the NCST has requested free legal assistance for Hansda's family, along with assurances that all case-related documentation and evidence are preserved without the risk of tampering.
Additionally, the NCST has called for the dismissal of the in-charge officers from Lalmatia, Boarijor, and Mahagama police stations, and for the roles of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Godda to be scrutinized.
The panel emphasized that the entire process must be executed transparently and impartially to unveil the truth.
It is important to note that on August 11, the Godda police claimed that Hansda, who was wanted in over 20 criminal cases, was killed in an encounter near Dhamni Pahad in Boarijor.
The police reported that he was shot during an escape attempt after allegedly snatching a weapon amidst an operation, while his associates allegedly assaulted the police team.
