Kolkata, April 20 (NationPress) The chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Vijaya K Rahatkar, announced on Sunday that she has urged West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose to prioritize the safety of women and children in the Murshidabad district, which experienced violence last week related to the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

“I have informed the Governor about the critical situation for women and children. The environment in Murshidabad is concerning. I have made a request to the Governor to ensure the security of children in the area,” Rahatkar stated after her meeting with the Governor at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata on Sunday evening.

An NCW team led by Rahatkar has been assessing the affected regions in Murshidabad for the past two days. They also visited a relief camp in the nearby Malda district, where individuals displaced by the communal unrest in Murshidabad are currently sheltered.

Earlier that day, while addressing reporters, Rahatkar stated that personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) acted as protectors for the women of Murshidabad after central armed police were dispatched on the night of April 12.

Rahatkar emphasized that the acknowledgment of the BSF's efforts came from the women in the impacted areas of Murshidabad, with whom the NCW team interacted over the past few days.

Furthermore, Rahatkar indicated that the NCW will compile a comprehensive report for the Union government based on their observations.

During their visit to various troubled areas in Murshidabad, the NCW delegation noted the community's plea for permanent BSF camps in the region.

The NCW representatives assured locals that they would discuss this matter with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
