Kolkata, April 18 (NationPress) West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose on Friday provided assurances regarding his personal involvement to ensure that every family displaced by the communal violence in Murshidabad district receives complete rehabilitation.
“Numerous homes have been destroyed. Therefore, the displaced families will only be allowed to return once their full rehabilitation has been secured. I came here personally to observe the current situation. I will prepare a comprehensive report on this issue upon my return,” the Governor stated to reporters after his visit to a temporary relief center at a school in the nearby Malda district, where the victims of the unrest are currently sheltered.
He further mentioned that individuals from a certain community had faced attacks in Murshidabad.
“While one faction initiated the violence, the other became its victim. This cycle cannot persist within a democratic framework. Such acts of violence are intolerable in any civilized society. I have spoken with the locals, including the children. There is a prevailing atmosphere of fear among them. People cannot thrive in such a climate of fear,” the Governor said.
A team from the National Commission for Women (NCW), led by Chairperson Vijaya K. Rahatkar, also visited the same relief camp on Friday afternoon and interacted with the displaced individuals.
After this interaction, delegation member Archana Majumdar made serious allegations against the district police.
“Those preparing food at the relief camp have been forcibly removed by the police. There seems to be an attempt to return the displaced individuals to their homes without ensuring their proper rehabilitation and safety. The displaced women currently residing at this relief shelter are not seeking financial compensation or housing. They demand the presence of central armed police forces for their protection. They want their dignity safeguarded,” Majumdar stated.
She also asserted that specific religious communities have been targeted.
“Their homes in Murshidabad have been set ablaze. They have received threats of sexual violence. Even charitable organizations like Ramakrishna Mission are prohibited from entering the relief camps. The media is also restricted from entering, ensuring that the grievances of the displaced do not reach the outside world,” Majumdar alleged.
