New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) Reinforcing its dedication to protect the rights and dignity of young girls, the National Commission for Women has urged all states and Union Territories to strengthen efforts in combating child marriages, specifically in light of 'Akshaya Tritiya' occurring on April 19, as stated by an official.

The Commission has communicated directives to the Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories on Saturday, emphasizing the need for rigorous enforcement of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, in every district.

“Considering the urgency and sensitivity surrounding this matter, the Commission has requested active involvement from Chief Secretaries to ensure collaborative action among various departments. The NCW reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of children, particularly young girls, and ensuring that no child is coerced into marriage,” the NCW stated.

The NCW underlined that child marriage is classified as a cognizable and non-bailable offence under the law. Legal actions will be taken against not only the parents but also all individuals aiding in such unions, including the groom, priests, event coordinators, and venue providers. Offenders face potential imprisonment of up to two years and fines reaching Rs 1 lakh.

The NCW emphasized that District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, and Child Marriage Prohibition Officers must remain alert and act swiftly, including registering cases as soon as they are discovered.

To enhance community involvement, the NCW advised state governments to implement extensive awareness campaigns at the grassroots level, especially in high-risk districts, focusing on the legal ramifications and detrimental impacts of child marriage.

The Chief Secretaries were also encouraged to motivate citizens to report suspected child marriage cases, ensuring the informants' confidentiality to enable prompt action.

Furthermore, the NCW called upon state governments to activate the Child Helpline (1098) and Police Helpline (112), as well as set up control rooms during the Akshaya Tritiya period for efficient reporting and intervention.

Close surveillance of mass marriage events was also advised to ensure strict adherence to age verification protocols.

The Commission proposed engaging local bodies, NGOs, and community leaders to actively identify and avert potential cases.

Pointing out serious concerns regarding the ongoing prevalence of child marriages in specific regions, the Commission observed that such events tend to increase during Akshaya Tritiya due to cultural beliefs and the hosting of mass marriage ceremonies.

Despite the legal ban stipulated by the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, these practices continue to occur, threatening the health, education, and overall well-being of young girls.

Point of View

Especially given the cultural significance of Akshaya Tritiya. The emphasis on legal enforcement and community awareness reflects a comprehensive approach to safeguarding the rights of vulnerable girls in our society.
