Kolkata, Aug 14 (NationPress) A new arrest has been made in relation to the purported assault on police officers during the Nabanna Avijan event in Kolkata, as reported by authorities on Thursday.
This arrest occurred on Wednesday evening.
The individual has been identified as Manas Chandra Saha, a resident of Naihati in the North 24 Parganas district.
Police sources indicate that sufficient evidence has been uncovered linking the accused directly to the incident on August 9, where a police constable was thrown onto the pavement and assaulted.
Earlier, on Tuesday, the Kolkata Police apprehended the first suspect in this case.
A 40-year-old man named Chandan Gupta was detained; he also resides in the North 24 Parganas district.
Chandan, who lives in Jagaddal, was arrested at the crossroads of BB Ganguly Street and Bentinck Street in Kolkata. He faces several charges, including attempted murder, hindering a government official in performing their duties, and deliberately inflicting injury.
Chandan was presented in Bankshall court on Wednesday, where the judge ordered him into police custody until August 15. The political affiliations of Manas remain undisclosed.
“He will appear in court today. Further investigations will continue after his custody,” stated a high-ranking police officer.
The first anniversary of the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 was overshadowed by significant violence following clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators at the Nabanna Avijan.
The mother of the victim claimed that she was assaulted by police when she, along with her husband and other protesters, attempted to march toward Nabanna.
She and BJP leaders accused the police of breaking her sacred conch shell bangle, traditionally seen as a symbol of married Hindu women.
In total, five police officers sustained injuries during the altercation with protesters.
A report has been filed at the New Market police station regarding the alleged “assault” on the policemen.
