Kolkata, Aug 12 (NationPress) The Kolkata Police have summoned former India cricketer-turned-BJP MLA Ashok Dinda to appear before them for allegedly threatening to assault policemen during the 'Nabanna Avijan' protest that took place on August 9.
Dinda is required to present himself at the New Market Police Station on August 17.
In addition, BJP leader Arjun Singh has also been called in for reportedly using abusive language towards police officers on duty.
A senior Kolkata Police official stated, "During the 'Nabanna Avijan' on Saturday, Ashok Dinda not only threatened our officers but also incited others to attack our on-duty police personnel. He was involved in assaulting a guard assigned to an IAS officer. Consequently, he has been summoned to the New Market Police Station on August 17. We have collected video evidence of Dinda threatening and abusing our police officers."
While addressing the media, Dinda remarked, "The day is not far when we will retaliate against the police. They will face severe consequences. Once the BJP gives the nod, we will beat the police so badly that they will seek refuge behind Mamata Banerjee."
It is important to highlight that following the violent events during the 'Nabanna Avijan'—which resulted in injuries to the mother of the RG Kar rape and murder victim—the police have filed seven cases against BJP leaders, including Dinda. These leaders have been accused of vandalizing public property, obstructing government officials from performing their duties, threatening on-duty police officers, verbally abusing them, assaulting police constables, and breaching a High Court order for a peaceful protest.
The authorities also reported that five policemen sustained injuries during the protest march, with three being hospitalized at SSKM Hospital.
The first anniversary of the horrendous rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, observed on Saturday, was overshadowed by significant violence that erupted following a confrontation between police and protesters involved in the Nabanna Avijan.
The mother of the victim claimed that she was physically assaulted by police officers when she, along with her husband and other demonstrators, attempted to march towards Nabanna.
