Jamnagar, July 9 (NationPress) A significant advancement in affordable healthcare has been achieved in Gujarat with the inauguration of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra by Jamnagar MP Poonamben Maadam on Wednesday at Guru Gobind Government Hospital.
The inauguration event was attended by the city's Mayor, BJP leaders, and the District Chief, marking a vital development in the region's healthcare framework.
The Jan Aushadhi Kendra, part of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), is designed to ensure that quality medicines are available to everyone, especially for the economically disadvantaged, at significantly reduced prices. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of “quality healthcare for all.”
In an interview with IANS, Maadam stated, “We are dedicated to making healthcare accessible and affordable to the public. This Jan Aushadhi Kendra represents a step towards that aim. I encourage citizens to purchase medicines from here — they are effective, safe, and much more affordable than branded counterparts.”
She highlighted that the Jan Aushadhi Kendras provide a variety of essential medicines, ranging from diabetes treatment to everyday health necessities, all at lower prices. Numerous such Kendras have already been established throughout Jamnagar to serve the local community.
Initiated in November 2016, the PMBJP is a flagship initiative by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Government of India. Its objective is to make high-quality generic medicines available at affordable prices through Jan Aushadhi Kendras nationwide. These generic alternatives maintain the quality and effectiveness of branded drugs while alleviating the financial strain on patients.
The PMBJP currently features an extensive product range of over 2,000 medicines and 300 surgical items, covering diverse therapeutic categories. This ensures that citizens can access effective treatments without sacrificing quality.
The program has experienced remarkable growth. As of October 20, 2024, Jan Aushadhi medicine sales for the financial year 2024-25 had already surpassed Rs 1,000 crore, highlighting the program’s success and the trust it has garnered from the public. Notably, in September 2024 alone, sales reached Rs 200 crore.
The number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras has surged from just 80 in 2014 to over 14,000 today — a staggering 170-fold increase in a decade. This expansion illustrates the government’s unwavering commitment to delivering affordable and reliable healthcare solutions to every corner of India.
With increasing support from both citizens and the government, the PMBJP continues to reshape India’s healthcare landscape — one affordable medicine at a time.
