Kolkata, July 11 (NationPress) In a bid to enhance the safety of both drivers and passengers using app-bikes and to minimize accidents, the West Bengal Transport department has established a limit on the weight and size of luggage that passengers can carry. This decision was announced on Friday to ensure safer travel experiences.
According to the notification issued by the State transport department, passengers are restricted to a maximum weight of 10 kg for their bags while traveling on app-bikes.
Additionally, the width of any luggage must not surpass 36 cm.
Furthermore, it has been mandated that all app-bikes must display number plates featuring a yellow base color moving forward.
These new regulations will apply to app-bikes operating in Kolkata as well as in various districts throughout the state.
In case of non-compliance with the new regulations concerning the weight and size of luggage or the color of number plates, the state transport department has warned of strict enforcement measures, including significant financial penalties.
An official from the transport department noted that there have been instances where passengers attempted to carry oversized and overweight luggage on app-bikes.
“Ideally, app-bike drivers should have declined such requests. However, many drivers are swayed by additional payments offered by passengers and agree to transport bulky items, which heightens the risk of accidents. For some time, the transport department has been contemplating the need for a weight and size limit, and this decision has now been made final,” the official remarked.
Moreover, there have been complaints regarding private motorcycle or two-wheeler owners providing rides without proper registration with any app-cab company.
“Thus, the regulation regarding the mandatory usage of yellow number plates has been implemented,” the transport department official stated.
