Chandigarh, March 23 (NationPress) The Doaba region of Punjab has welcomed its third medical college in just 36 months as Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ceremoniously laid the foundation stone for a government medical college in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, with an estimated investment of approximately Rs 300 crore.
The Chief Minister had previously initiated the establishment of medical colleges in Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala.
Out of the four districts in the Doaba area, three—Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar—will now host government medical colleges.
The upcoming Government Medical College will be affiliated with the Civil Hospital, and this institution, named in honor of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, stands as a tribute to his enduring legacy and dedication to the people of Punjab, as stated by officials.
This college will provide 50 MBBS seats, making medical education more accessible to students in the area. Currently, the District Civil Hospital in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar offers secondary-level care but lacks specialized medical services.
With the launch of this medical college, specialist and super-specialist doctors will be available around the clock. The hospital will evolve into a cutting-edge teaching hospital, serving the needs of both patients and medical students.
Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar is a remote district with limited access to tertiary healthcare facilities, and previous governments largely overlooked this area, compelling patients to seek treatment in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, or Chandigarh. However, this medical college aims to alleviate the patient load on referral hospitals by providing advanced care locally and training future doctors in a rural environment, motivating them to serve the local populace.
This initiative has been expedited to ensure a timely completion and operational readiness. The recruitment of faculty and staff will be prioritized to make this institution fully operational as soon as possible.
The government is committed to ensuring prompt construction and infrastructure development, along with additional funding for enhancing hospital services and further improvements to establish Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar as a healthcare hub for northern Punjab, officials confirmed.
