Key Takeaways
Srinagar, Feb 17 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) launched an operation on Tuesday, conducting searches at the residence of a retired government staff member in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar city, as part of an inquiry into a terror-related case initiated in 2024.
According to official sources, the NIA executed the search at the residence of Gulam Nabi Bhat located in the Mehjoor Nagar area of Srinagar this morning.
The operation saw collaboration from the J&K Police and CRPF, assisting NIA officials during the search.
Further details regarding the raid and official statements are currently pending.
The NIA has been actively investigating prominent terror cases within the union territory, including those involving JKLF chairman Yasin Malik, senior separatist figures Shabir Shah, Nayeem Khan, Engineer Rashid, among others.
In a notable case against Yasin Malik, the NIA successfully secured a life sentence for him. Additionally, they have sought the death penalty for him in relation to the murders of four IAF personnel, including Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna.
On January 25, 1990, members of the JKLF targeted Indian Air Force personnel in Rawalpora, Srinagar, resulting in the death of four and injuries to 30 others. This incident, led by Yasin Malik, has significant legal ramifications, as the unarmed personnel awaited transport when they were attacked. In 2022, Yasin Malik admitted guilt to charges linked to this conspiracy, and in early 2025, a witness identified another suspect, Shaukat Bakshi, in the 1990 slayings.
The NIA is also investigating several other critical terror-related issues, such as the ‘Ansar Interim’ white-collar terror module case, the Pahalgam terror attack case, targeted killings, terror funding, and the Hizbul Mujahideen over-ground worker (OGW) network.
In another incident, on June 9, 2024, terrorists attacked a bus transporting Hindu pilgrims in the Reasi district of Jammu, leading to the deaths of nine and injuries to over 40. The bus, which was en route to the Vaishno Devi shrine, fell into a gorge due to the attack. The NIA investigated this case and conducted raids in September 2024 across seven locations in the UT, filing charges against the accused in December 2024.
