Rail connectivity between Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, southern Assam, and the rest of the country has been disrupted for nearly a month after incessant heavy rainfall triggered soil subsidence along the strategically critical Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section in Assam's Dima Hasao district, officials confirmed on Monday, 10 August. The damage, concentrated near New Harangajao station, has affected a stretch of approximately 300 metres of track and shows no firm timeline for full restoration.

Scale of the Damage

According to a senior Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) official, continuous moderate to heavy rainfall caused the settlement of Line 1 and Line 2 near New Harangajao station, leaving only Line 3 operational. All train movements through the affected stretch are currently routed on Line 3 under strict monitoring and enhanced safety protocols.

Passenger-carrying trains have been suspended through the section during night hours as a safety precaution. Daytime operations are permitted only under regulated conditions with continuous oversight.

Trains Cancelled and Rescheduled

The NFR has cancelled the Guwahati-Silchar Express and the Guwahati-Dullabcherra Express since the disruption began. Several other trains serving southern Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur have been rescheduled, regulated, or partially cancelled. The Kolkata-Agartala Express, which was scheduled to depart on 9 August, was regulated en route within the Lumding Division.

Restoration Efforts Under Way

'A huge number of workers, railway personnel and engineering teams are working despite inclement weather, and heavy machinery has been deployed on a war footing to restore the affected tracks and lines at the earliest. However, we are unable to say when normal train services will resume,' the NFR official said. The official added that persistent rainfall has 'significantly hampered repair efforts, delaying the resumption of normal services.'

Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said state government officials are in close coordination with NFR engineers to expedite the restoration work near New Harangajao station.

Political Pressure Mounts

Opposition parties, including the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian National Congress, have accused the Railway Ministry and the Tripura government of failing to take adequate steps to fast-track repairs on a corridor of such strategic importance. The criticism comes as the disruption enters its fourth week with no confirmed restoration date.

A Recurring Monsoon Crisis

The Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section is the principal rail artery linking Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and southern Assam to the broader national network. Any prolonged outage cascades into shortages of foodgrains, fuel, construction materials, and other essential commodities across the region.

This is not an isolated incident. Every monsoon season, the mountainous terrain of Dima Hasao district — formerly known as North Cachar Hills — renders railway embankments, bridges, and tracks vulnerable to landslides, waterlogging, and soil erosion during the June-to-September rainfall window. The four-month monsoon cycle has historically caused repeated, prolonged disruptions across the Northeast, placing recurring pressure on supply chains and passenger movement in some of India's most geographically isolated states.

With restoration timelines uncertain and rainfall continuing, the affected states face an extended wait before normal rail services resume.
