Guwahati, September 19 (NationPress) Nupur Borah, an embattled Assam Civil Service officer, faced suspension from her duties on Friday following her arrest related to the confiscation of Rs 1.7 crore in cash and valuable ornaments from her various residences across the state.
The official directive stated that Borah has been in police custody for employing a range of illegal tactics during her tenure in the Barpeta district.
On the day of her arrest, she was escorted to the Goroimari circle office in the Kamrup district, which was her last posting.
Investigators from the Chief Minister's vigilance cell seized numerous documents from her office, although the Investigating Officer withheld specific details.
Earlier in the week, authorities reported that approximately Rs 23 lakh was retrieved from two bank lockers belonging to Nupur Borah.
These lockers were located in Barpeta district, and officials from the Chief Minister Vigilance Cell were dispatched there on Friday.
Since her arrest two days prior, investigators have been delving into the financial trail linked to the illegal land transfers that occurred during her time in Barpeta.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that strict legal measures would be enforced against Borah, who is accused of accumulating assets disproportionately larger than her known income sources.
At the time of her arrest, Borah, who was serving as the Circle Officer in Goroimari under the Kamrup district, was found to possess wealth nearly 400 times her official salary.
The Chief Minister remarked that the extent of corruption was so alarming that mere suspension or termination would not suffice as a penalty.
"She had accumulated wealth 400 times more than her known income sources. We believe that merely suspending or dismissing her is inadequate. She must face legal consequences through the proper judicial process," CM Sarma stated during a public event in Baksa district.
Officials from the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell conducted thorough searches at Borah's residences in both Guwahati and Barpeta, leading to the recovery of Rs 92.5 lakh in cash, alongside gold and diamond ornaments valued at nearly Rs 1.5 crore.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Vigilance Cell) Rosie Kalita characterized the recovery as the most significant cash seizure in the history of the cell.
Investigators have also traced ownership of three flats in Guwahati linked to Borah, along with additional properties under investigation.
Several individuals suspected of aiding these transactions are currently being interrogated.
CM Sarma noted that Borah had come under scrutiny approximately six months ago after allegedly sanctioning an illegal land transfer while in Barpeta district.
Following the ensuing controversy, she was reassigned to Goroimari in Kamrup, where surveillance of her activities continued.
The Chief Minister urged the public to stay vigilant against corruption and report any instances of bribery.
CM Sarma reaffirmed his government's dedication to combatting corruption, emphasizing that investigations into Borah and her associates would be conducted transparently to maintain accountability within the administration.
