Guwahati, Sep 17 (NationPress) On Wednesday, the Chief Minister's vigilance cell successfully recovered approximately Rs 23 lakh from two bank lockers belonging to the detained Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora, according to official sources.
The lockers were located in Barpeta district, where vigilance officers conducted their operation today.
Since her apprehension two days prior, Bora has been subjected to intense questioning by investigators to trace the illicit monetary transactions tied to illegal land transfers during her tenure in Barpeta.
Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that rigorous legal measures would be taken against Bora, who has been accused of accumulating assets significantly exceeding her declared income sources.
At the time of her arrest, Bora was serving as the Circle Officer in Goroimari, Kamrup district, and was found to have wealth nearly 400 times greater than her official salary.
CM Sarma emphasized that the extent of corruption was so severe that mere suspension or dismissal would not suffice as punishment.
"She has acquired wealth 400 times her known income sources. We believe that suspension or dismissal alone is inadequate; she must undergo legal consequences," CM Sarma expressed during a public event in Baksa district.
Vigilance Cell officials executed thorough searches at Bora's residences in Guwahati and Barpeta, leading to the recovery of Rs 92.50 lakh in cash along with gold and diamond jewelry valued at nearly Rs 1.5 crore.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Vigilance Cell) Rosie Kalita characterized this recovery as the largest cash seizure in the cell's history.
Investigators also uncovered ownership of three flats in Guwahati associated with the officer, alongside other properties under investigation.
Numerous individuals suspected of facilitating these transactions are currently being interrogated. CM Sarma revealed that Bora had been under scrutiny for about six months following her alleged approval of an illegal land transfer while in Barpeta.
After this incident, she was reassigned to Goroimari in Kamrup, where surveillance on her activities continued.
The Chief Minister urged citizens to stay vigilant against corruption and report any bribery incidents.
CM Sarma reaffirmed his government's dedication to combating corruption, asserting that the investigations into Bora and her associates would be executed transparently to ensure accountability within the administration.
