Bhubaneswar, Aug 7 (NationPress) Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized that the handloom heritage of Odisha is a dynamic art form that instills pride and prestige in the state across both national and global markets.
While inaugurating the EKTA (Exhibition-cum-Knowledge Sharing for Textile Advantage) event to commemorate National Handlooms Day, CM Majhi stated, "Our handloom is a fundamental pillar of Odia Asmita (Odisha Pride). This sector is not merely an economic asset but also a representation of national pride and dignity. From ancient maritime commerce to contemporary global fashion, our textiles have consistently celebrated excellence, spirituality, and culture. The government is dedicated to enhancing the socio-economic conditions of our weavers through the Handloom Development Scheme."
In a pivotal decision, aimed at promoting Odisha's rich handloom legacy on a broader scale, the state government has appointed renowned Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit as the brand ambassador for Odisha Handloom for one year.
During the announcement, the Chief Minister expressed optimism that Dixit's active participation would elevate the recognition of Odisha's handloom products in the national and international fashion scene.
Majhi revealed that over 1.3 lakh weavers and associated workers are directly involved in Odisha's handloom sector.
He noted that these weavers are part of primary weavers’ cooperative societies, self-help groups, and producer associations working diligently to preserve the rich weaving legacy.
He mentioned the recent Odisha Textile Conclave, where 33 MoUs were signed, involving an investment of Rs 7,808 crore for establishing textile industries in the state.
"Our government is committed to providing infrastructural and institutional support. We are currently developing handloom parks in locations like Baragarh and Cuttack, equipped with essential facilities such as dye houses, warehouses, design studios, and quality control labs," added CM Majhi.
"For excellence and innovation, over 40 master weavers from Odisha have received national honors. This initiative, which dates back 120 years to the inception of the Swadeshi movement, continues to remind us to honor our weavers and embrace the garments they create," the Chief Minister stated.
In her remarks, the celebrated actress Dixit stated: "Choosing handloom is synonymous with choosing dignity. Supporting our artisans means safeguarding our heritage. When we don Odisha's creations, we wear our pride. Let's honor the hands that create beauty, the villages that uphold our traditions, and the spirit that never falters."
She concluded her address with an inspiring call: "Let's unite and proudly declare this is Odia Asmita!"
