Odisha Prepares to Host the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

Bhubaneswar, Jan 4 (NationPress) Odisha is excited to host the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) for the inaugural time, taking place at Bhubaneswar's Janata Maidan from January 8 to 10.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrates Mahatma Gandhi's return to India from South Africa on January 9, 1915. This event, which started in 2003, recognizes the contributions of the overseas Indian community to the nation’s progress.
Since 2015, the event has been organized biennially to enhance the engagement of the Indian diaspora with the Government of India and to reconnect them with their cultural heritage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in Bhubaneswar via a special IAF aircraft at 8 p.m. on January 8, marking his first visit to Odisha in 2025. Following this, on January 9, he will participate in the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
The Odisha Government has implemented comprehensive arrangements for the event, including the creation of control rooms and helplines. The Commissionerate Police has introduced a special mascot, "HAPFY", alongside a chatbot to assist participants during this grand event.
Enhanced fire safety protocols have been established at the venue.
Devendra Kumar Swain, Chief Fire Officer of Odisha Fire and Emergency Services, elaborated on the preparations, stating, "Approximately 200 personnel, 30–35 vehicles, and specialized equipment have been assigned to ensure safety."
"We have also organized separate zones, such as the main pandal and dining area for the Prime Minister, with suitable security measures. Furthermore, a control room, a mother control room, and eight backup fire stations will operate continuously," he informed IANS.
In an interview with IANS, acclaimed sculpture artist Sudarsan Pattnaik expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, "This is a crucial moment for the art and culture of Odisha. Indian expatriates often commend Odisha's artistic heritage during international sand art competitions, and now they will experience it firsthand."
He also mentioned that a mini beach featuring sand sculptures will be created at the venue for visitors who are unable to visit Puri.
A key highlight of the event will be the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) 2025, which will be presented by President Murmu during the concluding session.
In total, 27 individuals will be honored with this prestigious award for their extraordinary contributions both in India and internationally.
The award recognizes Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and organizations managed by them for their outstanding achievements across various sectors.
Chosen by a distinguished jury-cum-awards committee, the awardees exemplify the remarkable accomplishments of the Indian diaspora, highlighting their essential role in shaping the global narrative.
As Bhubaneswar readies itself to host dignitaries and expatriates from around the globe, the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is anticipated to be a significant celebration of the Indian diaspora's achievements and their enduring ties to their homeland.
