Bhubaneswar, May 17 (NationPress) The Odisha Vigilance Department has apprehended a senior official from the government, identified as Asit Kumar Patra, who was discovered to possess assets valued in crores that are significantly disproportionate to his declared income sources, according to officials.
Patra, serving as the Additional Block Development Officer (ABDO) at the Dharmasala block in Jajpur district, was taken into custody on May 16. He was subsequently presented before the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Cuttack, due to the possession of Disproportionate Assets (DA) amounting to 205 percent of his known income sources, which he failed to justify adequately.
A case has been lodged against Patra and his spouse under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.
During searches at multiple locations associated with Patra, vigilance officials uncovered significant movable and immovable properties owned by him and his family. The discovered assets comprise three multi-storeyed buildings, a shopping complex in Jajpur district, a 2-BHK flat in Cuttack, five highly valued plots, gold ornaments weighing 800 grams, and bank and insurance deposits worth Rs 70 lakh, among others.
In a separate incident, the State Vigilance Department apprehended Niranjan Dhal, the NAC Executive Officer in Khandapada, Nayagarh district, red-handed while accepting a bribe from a contractor at his official residence on Friday evening.
Dhal was soliciting the bribe for payments already approved for completed works by the contractor, as well as to carry out necessary measurements for another completed project and to expedite the release of payments in favor of the contractor.
“Faced with no alternative, the complainant reported the issue to Vigilance authorities, citing harassment by Dhal. Following this, Vigilance officials apprehended Dhal while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000. The entire bribe amount has been confiscated, and concurrent searches are underway at five locations linked to Dhal concerning the DA investigation,” stated a senior official from the Vigilance Department.
