A bus driver was killed and around 50 passengers were injured after two buses collided head-on on the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi National Highway (NH-22) in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district on Wednesday, 2 September, at approximately 3 pm IST. The crash, which occurred near Bedaul/Gopalpur under the jurisdiction of Aurai police station, caused significant disruption on the highway and triggered panic among passengers and local residents.

How the Collision Unfolded

According to eyewitnesses, both buses were travelling at high speed when they collided head-on. The impact was severe enough to trap the driver of one of the buses inside the wreckage. Police personnel, aided by local villagers, deployed a cutting machine to break open the damaged vehicle and retrieve the trapped driver. He was, however, found to have already succumbed to his injuries by the time he was freed.

The deceased driver was identified as Sujit Kumar, a resident of Sitamarhi. Police took custody of the body and sent it to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) for post-mortem examination.

Injured Passengers and Medical Response

Of the roughly 50 passengers travelling on the two buses, more than half a dozen reportedly sustained serious injuries and were referred to SKMCH for advanced treatment. Others received care at nearby healthcare facilities. Authorities reported that the condition of those injured was not life-threatening.

The crash triggered immediate panic at the scene, with passengers calling for help and local villagers rushing to assist those trapped inside the damaged vehicles.

What the Police Said

Aurai police station in-charge Sushil Kumar confirmed that the accident involved a head-on collision between the 'Girja bus' and the 'Sanovar bus'. 'A severe head-on collision occurred between the Girja bus and the Sanovar bus around 3 pm on Wednesday. The driver of the Girja bus died after becoming trapped inside the vehicle. Several passengers sustained injuries in the incident,' Sushil Kumar said.

Police personnel from Aurai police station managed the situation at the scene, arranged for the damaged buses to be cleared from the road, and subsequently restored traffic movement on NH-22, which had seen long queues of vehicles forming in the aftermath of the crash.

Investigation Under Way

Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision. Officials said a technical analysis of the speed of both buses and other contributing factors would be carried out as part of the probe. The role of overspeeding, as indicated by eyewitness accounts, is expected to be a key focus of the inquiry.

This incident adds to a troubling pattern of fatal highway accidents in Bihar, where inadequate road infrastructure and high-speed driving have repeatedly been cited as contributing factors. As investigators piece together the sequence of events, the focus will be on whether systemic issues — from road design on NH-22 to bus operator compliance — played a part in Wednesday's tragedy.
