Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday, 30 July weighed in on the controversy surrounding Hockey India's decision to replace the national team's traditional blue jersey with an orange kit for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, saying the youth of the country had already made their views clear — regardless of what changes the ruling establishment makes.

What Priyanka Gandhi Said

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament in New Delhi, Gandhi broadened the jersey dispute into a wider political statement. 'Whether they change the uniform or try to rewrite history through the education policy, no matter what they do, the youth of this country have made their views clear,' she said. 'You saw what the young people gathered at Jantar Mantar were saying. That is the voice of the nation.'

She went on to invoke the values of India's freedom movement, asserting that the nation's soul was rooted in non-violence, truth, and brotherhood. 'No one can remove it. It does not matter what they do, or whether they create violence or spread hate. In the end, the soul of this country is one of brotherhood and unity,' Gandhi added.

Rasquinha's Criticism of the Orange Kit

The political reaction follows sharp criticism from former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha, who publicly questioned Hockey India's choice to unveil a predominantly orange jersey for both the men's and women's national teams ahead of the World Cup, to be held in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Posting on X, Rasquinha — who captained India and represented the country at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2006 Men's Hockey World Cup — acknowledged the federation's contributions to the sport before expressing disappointment. 'I must say that @TheHockeyIndia has done many good things for Indian hockey. But this is embarrassing,' he wrote.

The former midfielder stressed that blue has long been inseparable from the team's identity. 'The legacy and identity of the Indian team has always been BLUE. I wore the Blue jersey with pride for many years,' he said, adding: 'Fans want to see our Indian team in blue. What is the logic of orange?'

Hockey India's Symbolism Argument

Hockey India defended the new design in a detailed social media video, outlining the symbolism behind each element. According to the federation, the saffron colour represents 'courage, sacrifice and victory,' drawing inspiration from the Indian national flag and the rising sun to signify new beginnings. The jersey features mandala-inspired patterns celebrating India's cultural heritage, deep navy blue accents inspired by the Ashoka Chakra to represent progress, peace and focus, and a modern interpretation of the Sudarshan Chakra on the chest symbolising strength, unity and momentum.

The design also incorporates Tricolour piping along the shoulders and sides, 'India' written in stylised Devanagari script, and branding recognising Odisha's long-standing support for Indian hockey. Hockey India stated the jersey embodies the spirit of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.'

The Bigger Picture

This is not the first time a sporting uniform change has triggered political commentary in India, but the speed with which the jersey row migrated from hockey forums to Parliament corridors reflects how deeply identity — cultural, national, and political — is contested in the current climate.
