Leh, Sep 27 (NationPress) In a shocking revelation, the Director General of Police (DGP) for Ladakh, S.D. Singh Jamwal, informed the media on Saturday that authorities have detained a Pakistani intelligence officer (PIO) who maintained contact with Sonam Wangchuk and was relaying information about him back to Pakistan.

During a press conference, the head of Ladakh police stated: “I would like to inform you that we have arrested a PIO who was in communication with Sonam Wangchuk and transmitting reports regarding him to Pakistan.

“Sonam Wangchuk’s profile and history are accessible on YouTube.

“Wangchuk has been vocal about Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, aiming to incite emotions. He has his own agenda. We are currently investigating his FCRA violations, and I cannot disclose any further information at this time as the investigation is ongoing,” the DGP explained.

DGP S.D. Singh Jamwal emphasized that through ongoing discussions between the two leading bodies of LAB and KDA and the Centre, significant progress has already been made.

“Ladakh is unique in the country, providing 85 percent reservations for locals. A third of the council seats are reserved for women. In efforts to preserve local culture, the Burgi and Bodi languages have been granted official status.

“While these developments were taking place, certain so-called social activists, particularly Sonam Wangchuk, whose personal credibility is questionable, attempted to seize the moment and disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in Ladakh. They initiated a hunger strike, and despite warnings that such actions would hinder ongoing negotiations, they led around 5,000-6,000 people, including those with ulterior motives, to engage in violent protests, damaging public property,” the senior police official stated.

The DGP further recounted, “The demonstrators set fire to a political party office and assaulted security personnel. They ignited a structure with four female security officers inside. My vehicle was also damaged, causing me minor injuries. In extreme circumstances, the police had to fire upon the crowd, resulting in four fatalities.

“There were 70 protesters and an equal number of security forces. One woman injured in the unrest was airlifted to Delhi for medical treatment. I assure the public that the Ladakh Police have a commendable service record. This is my second term in Ladakh, and I understand the sentiments and needs of the Ladakhi people.”

He added: “We have made sacrifices. This year, we lost one inspector and two constables in three separate incidents. What transpired on September 24 was an isolated event. The police exist to serve the community and operate 24/7. Nonetheless, I must stress that anti-social elements will face consequences.

“I warmly invite the youth to join us, whether in the police force or other government positions,” the DGP concluded.

The curfew was lifted today in stages, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and the relaxation period occurred without incident.
