Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) The government is set to implement alterations to the Permanent Account Number (PAN) application procedures, with new regulations taking effect on April 1, 2026.
Under the updated guidelines, applications for PAN cards using solely Aadhaar will no longer be acceptable. Citizens are encouraged to submit their applications using Aadhaar before the deadline of March 31, 2026.
In a recent update on X, the government-supported Common Services Centres (CSC) stated that applicants can currently receive a PAN card with only Aadhaar. However, starting April 1, additional documentation, including proof of date of birth (DOB), will be mandatory alongside Aadhaar.
"IMPORTANT UPDATE!! PAN Application Rules Changing From 1st April 2026," the post noted. "Apply Now Using Aadhaar Only Till 31st March 2026," it added.
Once the new rules are in place, applicants will also need to utilize updated PAN application forms, as the current versions will no longer be valid.
The CSC portal has indicated that new PAN application forms will be made available shortly. Additionally, it was mentioned that the name on the PAN card will be excluded starting from the new fiscal year.
As per this update, various documents will be accepted as proof of birth, which includes a birth certificate, voter ID, matriculation certificate, driving license, passport, affidavit, or any other government-issued documents.
The CSC also emphasized that names on PAN cards will be strictly aligned with Aadhaar records henceforth. “New PAN forms will be shared soon,” it confirmed.
Citizens are urged to finalize all PAN-related processes before the deadline to avoid the need for more documentation.
A PAN card is essential for engaging in financial and banking transactions, while Aadhaar serves as a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India.
Individuals can apply for a new PAN through the websites of Protean (previously NSDL eGov), UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITSL), or the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal.
Previously, the government had warned that fraudsters are attempting scams by sending misleading emails regarding ‘download e-PAN card online’ requests.
“Have you also received an email prompting you to download an e-PAN card?” PIB Fact Check stated in an X post. “This email is fraudulent... Refrain from responding to any emails, links, calls, or SMS that ask for your financial and sensitive information,” it cautioned the public.
