End of Parliament Special Session: Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha Adjourned Sine Die
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) The sessions of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were adjourned sine die shortly after their commencement on Saturday, bringing the Parliament's Special Session to a close.
On the previous day, the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 was rejected in the Lok Sabha.
This Bill aimed to establish a 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament but failed to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority, leading to significant political tensions between the ruling NDA and the Opposition INDIA bloc.
Despite a lengthy debate, the proposed legislation, which also sought to increase the strength of the House, could not meet the constitutionally required two-thirds majority. It garnered 278 votes in favor and 211 against, falling short of the threshold needed for approval.
In light of this, the Centre opted not to proceed with two related Bills concerning delimitation, stating that the three Bills should be considered separately.
Meanwhile, leaders from the Opposition convened at the chamber of Congress National President and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge within the Parliament Complex.
The Bill's defeat has led to heightened political tensions, with the NDA accusing the INDIA bloc of intentionally obstructing a pivotal reform aimed at enhancing women's representation in legislative bodies.
On the other hand, the Opposition is contesting the linking of the Women's Reservation Bill to the expansion of Parliament based on the 2011 Census and the delimitation exercise.
Prior to this, on Friday, leaders from the ruling NDA held an urgent meeting in Parliament following the Bill's defeat.
Sources indicate that during this meeting, it was resolved that NDA constituents would highlight the Opposition's resistance to women's empowerment.
This message will be communicated to the public nationwide through protests, press conferences, and social media to raise awareness about the situation.
The NDA plans to initiate a nationwide protest campaign on Saturday against the INDIA bloc concerning this issue.
According to party leaders, demonstrations will take place at district headquarters across the country, spearheaded by the BJP's women's wing, the BJP Mahila Morcha.
The campaign aims to underscore what the NDA refers to as the Opposition's "anti-women agenda", while also rallying public opinion around the matter. The BJP is anticipated to elevate this issue during the upcoming elections, particularly in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
