At least 11 people were killed and five others injured after a massive fire triggered a series of explosions at a firecracker factory in Manouri Bazaar, under Pipri police station limits in Kaushambi district, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday, 31 August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths and announced ex-gratia relief from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

PM Modi Announces Relief

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi wrote: “Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap at a firecracker factory in Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief.” He announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from the PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased, and Rs. 50,000 for each of the injured.

Rescue and Relief Operations

District Magistrate Amit Pal Sharma confirmed that rescue and relief operations were still underway, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) deployed at the site. Officials feared that more victims could still be trapped beneath the debris of the factory and nearby structures that collapsed in the blast.

Residents of the area were among the first to respond, carrying those with burn injuries on makeshift stretchers to the roadside before ambulances transported them to Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital in Prayagraj. A child is reportedly among the critically injured. Several residents of nearby homes were also hurt in the explosions.

What the State Government Said

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow and directed officials to expedite rescue operations and ensure proper medical treatment for all injured persons. He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 each to the injured from the state government.

Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya described the loss of multiple members from a single family as heartbreaking, and directed hospital authorities to provide the best possible treatment. He stressed that saving lives remained the government's top priority.

Legal Action and Accountability

The District Magistrate assured strict action against those found responsible. Criminal cases are to be registered under serious sections of the law, and measures including property attachment are to be initiated in line with government directives. Administrative and police teams have cordoned off the area as search and clearance operations continue.

Scale of Devastation

Images from the site showed relatives searching desperately through rubble for missing family members, while others rushed to hospitals seeking information about loved ones. The blast damaged not only the factory but also surrounding structures, underlining the scale of destruction. This comes amid longstanding concerns about safety compliance at unregulated firecracker manufacturing units across Uttar Pradesh.
