New Delhi, March 30 (NationPress) During the 120th episode of his monthly radio show 'Mann Ki Baat', Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the urgent necessity for water conservation, pointing out the significant initiatives being taken nationwide to tackle water scarcity.

He urged the public to actively engage in these efforts as the summer season draws near.

"As summer approaches, preparations for water saving commence in numerous cities and villages. In several states, activities related to water harvesting and conservation have gained renewed energy. The Ministry of Jal Shakti along with various NGOs are diligently working in this area. Thousands of artificial ponds, check dams, borewell recharge systems, and community soak pits are being constructed throughout the country," PM Modi stated.

He highlighted the importance of the 'Catch the Rain' campaign, mentioning, "As with every year, this time too, preparations are being made vigorously for the 'Catch the Rain' initiative. This campaign is not just a government effort... it belongs to society, to the Janata-Janaardan; the people. The Jal Sanchay-Jan Bhagidari Abhiyan is also underway to engage more individuals in water conservation. The goal is to ensure that we safely pass on our natural resources to future generations."

Emphasizing the benefits of rainwater conservation, he remarked, "By capturing raindrops, we can prevent a significant amount of water from being wasted. In recent years, this campaign has undertaken unprecedented tasks related to water conservation across various regions of the country."

PM Modi shared remarkable statistics, indicating that over the past seven to eight years, more than 11 billion cubic meters of water have been saved through the construction of tanks, ponds, and other water recharge structures.

"You might have seen images of the water accumulated in the Bhakra Nangal Dam. This water forms the Govind Sagar Lake, which stretches over 90 kilometers. Even in this lake, no more than 9-10 billion cubic meters of water can be conserved. Yet, through their small efforts, our countrymen have managed to conserve 11 billion cubic meters of water across different regions -- isn't that a remarkable achievement!" PM Modi remarked.

Pointing to an inspiring case from Karnataka's Gadag district, the Prime Minister spoke about villagers revitalizing dried-up lakes.

"A few years back, the lakes in two villages had completely dried up. There came a moment when there was insufficient water even for the animals. Gradually, the lake became overrun with weeds and bushes. However, some villagers took the initiative to restore the lake and began their work."

Reinforcing the notion that determination breeds success, he stated, "Observing the villagers' efforts, local social organizations also joined in. Together, they cleaned the debris and mud, and soon, the lake area was entirely revitalized. Now, residents are eagerly anticipating the rainy season. This is indeed a splendid example of the 'Catch the Rain' campaign."

Encouraging citizens to participate in similar initiatives, PM Modi advocated for small but meaningful actions.

"You too can take part in such community-level efforts. Make a plan now to advance this mass movement, and remember one thing more. If possible, place cold water in an earthen pot at your home during the summer. Provide water for birds on your roof or even in your verandah. Observe the joy you will feel after performing this punya karma; this pious deed," he concluded.
