Chennai, Sep 20 (NationPress) The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) is experiencing a significant shift following the Election Commission's official recognition of Anbumani Ramadoss as the party’s President. In light of this development, it has been reported that party founder Dr. S. Ramadoss has requested a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the ongoing situation.
The conflict between father and son within the PMK has been escalating for months. Both Ramadoss and Anbumani have held separate general council meetings, each asserting their claim to the party leadership.
On August 9, Anbumani convened a general council session that passed a resolution endorsing his position as party President.
The Election Commission reviewed the documentation submitted on August 10 and 11, subsequently accepting the resolution and issuing a letter confirming Anbumani's leadership.
However, the Ramadoss faction has chosen to reject this decision. Senior leaders Murali Shankar, MLA Arul, and Swaminathan met with the Chief Election Commissioner on September 17, urging the commission to revoke recognition of Anbumani.
Additionally, they requested that the party headquarters be recognized at Thailapuram, the founder’s residence, instead of the address provided by Anbumani’s faction.
Despite these challenges, Anbumani enjoys significant support within the party.
Three out of five PMK MLAs, General Secretary Vadivel Ravanan, Treasurer Thilagavathi Bama, most district secretaries, and over 90 percent of the general council members have rallied behind him.
The Election Commission has asserted that its decision reflects this substantial backing. With the commission's position clear, the Ramadoss faction is gearing up to contest the ruling in court.
Meanwhile, close advisers to Dr. Ramadoss have suggested that he directly approach Prime Minister Modi. They believe that while the BJP leadership firmly supports Anbumani, the Prime Minister continues to hold a deep respect and personal admiration for Dr. Ramadoss, having met him on several occasions in the past.
“The BJP is openly backing Anbumani, but the Prime Minister has always valued Dr. Ramadoss,” said an executive aligned with the founder.
“If he meets Modi, there is an opportunity to find common ground and alleviate tensions within the party. That is why he has requested time with the Prime Minister.”
As the legal and political struggle continues, the PMK remains fractured, with the father-son divide posing a risk to party unity ahead of pivotal state elections.
