Amaravati, Feb 28 (NationPress) A court in Annamayya district of Andhra Pradesh has placed actor and YSR Congress Party member Posani Krishna Murali in judicial custody for 14 days due to his derogatory remarks aimed at Deputy Chief Minister and actor Pawan Kalyan.
The ruling was delivered at approximately 5 a.m. after an extensive hearing that lasted over seven hours in Railway Koduru.
Posani faces charges of inciting discord among different groups based on caste and was subsequently transferred to Kadapa jail.
Authorities apprehended the 66-year-old actor at his home in Hyderabad on Wednesday night and presented him to a magistrate on Thursday evening following an interrogation at Obulavaripalle Police Station.
The hearing commenced around 9:30 p.m. and extended until 5 a.m. Posani’s attorney, P. Sudhakar Reddy, requested bail; however, the magistrate denied the request and remanded him to custody until March 12.
He was officially charged on February 24 following a complaint from Jana Sena leader Jogineni Mani, who accused Posani of derogatory statements against both the Jana Sena president and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. The complaint also alleged that Posani’s remarks targeted a specific caste and sought to incite enmity among caste groups, film enthusiasts, and political factions.
Charges against Posani fall under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 196, 353 (2), and 111 r/w 3 (5).
Following his transport from Hyderabad to Railway Koduru, police interrogated Posani for over nine hours, with Annamayya district Superintendent of Police Vidyasagar Naidu personally questioning him due to his lack of cooperation during the initial inquiry. A government doctor also conducted a medical examination of the actor at the station.
Similar allegations have been filed against Posani in various police stations across the state for his derogatory comments regarding Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Minister Nara Lokesh.
In November 2024, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Andhra Pradesh initiated an investigation against Posani following a complaint by Bandaru Vamsikrishna, a leader from the youth wing of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
This complainant asserted that Posani made false accusations and defamatory comments against Chandrababu Naidu during a press conference in September. The allegations indicated that the actor's remarks damaged the Chief Minister's reputation and incited divisions among communities.
Posani, who previously held the position of AP Film Development Corporation Chairman during the YSRCP administration, has been charged under sections 111, 196, 353, 299, 341, and 336 (3) of BNS.
