President Murmu Calls on Medical Professionals to Show Empathy and Kindness to Cancer Patients

New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu stated on Friday that empathy and kindness from medical professionals can profoundly influence a cancer patient's life.

This remark was made during her address at the opening of the KLE Cancer Hospital in Belagavi, Karnataka.

"It is the responsibility of healthcare providers to deliver holistic care that meets the physical and psychological needs of patients battling cancer," the President remarked.

"Every expression of sympathy and compassion from a doctor holds the potential to transform the life of their patient positively," she added.

In addition, President Murmu urged women to voice their health-related concerns.

She called upon families and society to take women's health more seriously and to actively contribute to their care and ensure timely treatment.

She pointed out that often the health issues faced by girls and women receive less attention compared to those of boys and men.

"Delays in addressing such issues, particularly concerning cancer, can be detrimental," she warned.

The President also advocated for a patient-centered and equitable healthcare system for cancer patients, one that is also world-class.

Moreover, she highlighted the urgency of spreading awareness regarding the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, noting that many cases arise from either ignorance or financial limitations.

"Such delays in diagnosis and treatment can worsen the outcomes of these diseases," she noted.

Sharing global cancer statistics, the President revealed that in 2022, there were approximately 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million deaths worldwide.

In India, the cancer incidence stands at about 100 patients for every one lakh individuals.

It is projected to rise by approximately 13 percent by 2025 compared to 2020, according to a study by the ICMR.
