Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, Feb 24 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, initiated an investigation on Tuesday into the reported harassment of Kashmiri students at CT University located in Ludhiana, Punjab.
This action followed allegations that Muslim students from Kashmir were coerced to leave the university premises due to a disagreement concerning arrangements for 'Sehri' (the pre-dawn meal) and 'Iftar' (the meal after sunset) during the sacred month of Ramzan.
In response to the situation, Chief Minister Abdullah affirmed that a thorough examination of the matter would be conducted, and he would directly address it with Bhagwant Mann, the Chief Minister of Punjab.
He further guaranteed that the Punjab administration would be accountable for the safety and well-being of Jammu and Kashmir students enrolled in their institutions.
Reports from CT University indicate that Kashmiri Muslim students faced threats of eviction after requesting meals for Sehri and Iftar despite having already paid their mess fees.
According to the students, this request resulted in what they described as harassment and administrative coercion.
A brief video, approximately 46 seconds long, has surfaced on social media showcasing students congregated outside the university, allegedly after being instructed to vacate their housing.
The students have claimed that the university's administration engaged in improper conduct and intimidation.
As of now, the university has not issued any formal statement regarding these events.
This incident has ignited extensive discussions online, with many advocating for reasonable accommodations for religious practices as guaranteed by the constitutional principles of equality and freedom of faith, while others have voiced contrasting opinions.
On the same day, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited his constituency, Ganderbal, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation for development projects exceeding Rs 84 crore.
During his visit, he engaged with various delegations from Ganderbal, promising to address their concerns.
Among the initiatives launched, he inaugurated a CT scan unit at the district hospital in Ganderbal.
