Key Takeaways
Jammu, March 12 (NationPress) Officials from the National Conference have shown deep distress and apprehension following a shooting incident involving former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah during a private event in Jammu.
A man attempted to assault National Conference president Farooq Abdullah while he was attending an event on Wednesday evening. The Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary was also in attendance. The alleged assailant is currently in police custody.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that the attempt on his father's life was prevented due to the immediate response of the close protection team responsible for his Z+ security detail.
“Thank God. My father narrowly escaped harm. The specifics are still unclear, but it is known that an individual with a loaded firearm managed to come dangerously close and fired a shot. Only due to the quick actions of the close protection team was the shot redirected, preventing the assassination attempt,” Omar Abdullah shared on X.
He also highlighted the security lapse, stating that many questions remain regarding how the suspect was able to approach such a well-guarded leader.
“There are more questions than answers currently, especially regarding how someone could get so near to a Z+ NSG-protected former Chief Minister,” he added.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, who was accompanying Farooq Abdullah at the event, noted that no one was harmed in the incident.
“By God's grace, the unfortunate attack on Dr. Farooq Abdullah today concluded without any injuries. I was there with him along with Nasir Sogami and we are all safe. Investigations are underway regarding the circumstances of this incident,” Choudhary stated.
Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo also condemned the incident strongly, calling it profoundly alarming.
On social media, she remarked, “I strongly condemn this shocking attack on Farooq Abdullah. This serious incident involving a Z+ protected former Chief Minister raises deeply troubling questions about how this was even allowed to happen.”
She expressed relief that Farooq Abdullah was unharmed but insisted on a thorough investigation into the matter.
“I am relieved to know he is safe. This whole situation must be carefully examined and accountability established for this serious security breach,” she emphasized.
National Conference MLA Tanvir Sadiq also confirmed that the leaders present during the incident were unharmed.
“I have spoken with Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Honorable Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Ji, and Nasir Aslam Wani. Thank God, they are all safe,” Sadiq stated.
The shooting incident occurred as Farooq Abdullah and other leaders were departing the venue after the private function. It remains unclear whether the alleged shooting was specifically targeted at the high-profile attendees.
The accused has been identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, who was swiftly subdued by security personnel present at the venue and taken into custody shortly after the incident.
Senior police officials responded rapidly to the scene of the shooting, and an investigation has commenced to uncover how the suspect was able to access the venue and the motives behind the act.
