Chennai, May 8 (NationPress) A professor from the SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) has faced suspension following her WhatsApp status updates that criticized India’s recent military operation known as Operation Sindoor, which received significant backlash on social media.

The suspended individual, identified as Lora S, holds the position of Assistant Professor at the Directorate of Career Centre on SRMIST's Kattankulathur campus.

On Wednesday, she shared several WhatsApp statuses denouncing the cross-border operation aimed at dismantling terrorist bases across the Line of Control.

In one of her messages, Lora accused the Indian government of utilizing military actions for political gain, while another expressed her condolences for the reported civilian casualties in Pakistan.

One of her statements highlighted: “India killed a CHILD in Pakistan and wounded two people in the early Wednesday strikes… It’s a cowardice act.”

She also forecasted potential economic hardships for India, warning of “lockdowns, inflation, food shortages, and loss of lives” in the decade ahead.

Although her messages were initially restricted to her WhatsApp contacts, they quickly went viral after BJP functionary Bala shared screenshots online, tagging SRMIST and questioning the university's stance on her opinions.

“Do you endorse this, SRM University? This is what academic activism looks like now?” he asked, igniting a wave of online responses. In light of rising pressure, SRMIST took immediate action to suspend Lora.

In a formal statement, Registrar S. Ponnusamy characterized her posts as “unethical activities” and announced the initiation of an internal investigation.

BJP state secretary S.G. Suryah commended the university’s prompt response but demanded even more stringent actions, stating, “Any institution that appoints her should be publicly condemned for harbouring anti-India views.”

Lora has yet to make a public statement regarding the incident.

SRMIST officials have not specified whether additional disciplinary measures will follow the inquiry.

This controversy has ignited a wider debate about academic freedom, the conduct of social media, and the responsibilities educators hold when discussing sensitive national matters.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize the balance between academic freedom and the potential ramifications of public statements by educators. While educators should be allowed to express their perspectives, they must also be mindful of the impact their words can have on national sentiment and institutional reputation. This incident exemplifies the ongoing struggle to maintain a respectful discourse in sensitive matters affecting the nation.
