Pune, Aug 18 (NationPress) On this Independence Day, the Pune Zilla Parishad initiated a groundbreaking program aimed at empowering single women, encompassing those who are widowed, divorced, separated, or unmarried, to achieve financial independence and a respected role in society.

The launch was marked by Pune Zilla Parishad CEO Gajanan Patil hoisting the national flag alongside four single women from rural areas. Numerous Gram Panchayats across Pune district also honored women who are widowed, divorced, separated, or unmarried by allowing them to host the Tricolour.

“This gesture transcends symbolism; it serves as a robust declaration of dignity, equality, and strength. The historic moment was further highlighted by a unanimous resolution passed at the Gram Panchayat level. This oath pledges that single women will always be treated with respect and fairness, condemning any form of discrimination, injustice, or neglect. It also advocates for their empowerment, financial independence, and rightful standing in society,” Patil stated.

In an interview with IANS, he expressed that this initiative was essential because single women represent one of the most neglected and underserved groups in society. They face a myriad of challenges, from economic difficulties to legal vulnerabilities and social ostracism.

“Widowed women in our communities have long been subjected to outdated practices, stripped of their identities and excluded from both social and religious spheres. By resolving to abolish these customs, Pune Zilla Parishad has made a monumental move toward reinstating dignity and ensuring equal rights for these women,” he elaborated.

According to Patil, the initiative guarantees that formerly marginalized women will now be treated with fairness and respect. They will regain the right to wear kumkum, mangalsutra, or jodvi if they so choose, participate in social and religious events, and gain access to empowerment and self-sufficiency opportunities.

“Standing alongside these women serves as a profound reminder that true freedom extends beyond mere political independence. It is about fostering a society where every individual, especially the most vulnerable, can live with dignity, security, and equal opportunity,” he articulated.

Furthermore, Pune Zilla Parishad plans to initiate a comprehensive six-month administrative drive to streamline access to essential documents, enabling every single woman to benefit from government initiatives.

They will also launch an awareness campaign to spotlight the social challenges faced by single women and to address these issues effectively. Legal and economic support will be provided through specialized legal experts, along with low-interest credit options and job opportunities that empower women to reclaim control over their lives and futures.

To bolster the livelihoods of single women, Pune Zilla Parishad will create market links for products made by these women, thereby promoting economic independence and fostering entrepreneurship from the grassroots level.
