Chandigarh, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday passed a unanimous censure motion that denounces the removal of portraits of Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar and Shaheed Bhagat Singh by the BJP-led government in Delhi after taking office.

The motion, introduced by Cabinet Minister Aman Arora, criticized the BJP government for disrespecting national icons.

During the Zero Hour, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema urged the Assembly to adopt a resolution condemning the BJP's actions in Delhi and to forward it to the President.

Cheema voiced his deep concern regarding the BJP's actions, stating that the capital has seen a significant disrespect towards Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Dalit community since the BJP came to power.

The Finance Minister described the removal of Ambedkar's pictures as a direct insult to Dalits across the nation and highlighted the troubling rise in atrocities against Dalits since the BJP ascended to power at the Centre. He pointed out the alarming frequency of incidents involving rape and attempts to disrupt the Constitution, raising questions about the BJP's motives regarding the nation’s legal framework.

Cheema further noted that this concern was underscored by the disrespect shown to Dr. Ambedkar by Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament, which contributed to the recent desecration of Dr. Ambedkar’s statue in Amritsar. He thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for promptly apprehending the individuals responsible for this act.

He asserted that this action showed the government's dedication to justice and the preservation of Babasaheb Ambedkar's legacy. In stark contrast, he claimed that had the BJP been in power in Punjab, the culprits would likely have evaded accountability.

Expressing gratitude to Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa for his support, the Finance Minister emphasized the need to remain united against any attempts to undermine the rights and dignity of marginalized communities, while safeguarding the principles of justice and equality that Ambedkar championed.
