Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha Raises Alarm Over Violence Against Women in Municipal Elections

Chandigarh, Dec 16 (NationPress) The President of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Punjab, Jai Inder Kaur, on Monday expressed her outrage over the violence and harassment directed at women candidates during the nomination phase of the Municipal Corporation elections.
She has urged the National Commission for Women (NCW) to promptly intervene and address these disturbing events.
In a correspondence addressed to the NCW Chairperson, Jai Inder Kaur stated: “The recent episodes of violence and intimidation against women candidates in Punjab are profoundly troubling and intolerable. It is shocking to witness how women have been targeted and threatened merely for exercising their right to participate in the democratic process.”
She further elaborated: “As the President of BJP Mahila Morcha, Punjab, I categorically condemn these atrocities and insist on immediate action from the National Commission for Women. It is crucial for the NCW to implement definitive measures to guarantee women’s safety and dignity throughout the electoral process.”
Jai Inder Kaur highlighted: “The incidents occurring in Patiala, where the nomination papers of BJP women candidates were destroyed and women were physically assaulted outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office, are especially concerning. Visual evidence evidently implicates senior AAP leaders, MLA Chetan Singh Jouramajra and MLA Ajit Pal Kohli.”
She also requested: “I call upon the NCW to form a fact-finding team to investigate these occurrences, recommend legal actions against the offenders, and instruct the Punjab Women Commission to execute its statutory obligations. The safety and empowerment of women are non-negotiable. We will persist in our quest for justice and accountability.”
The elections for five Municipal Corporations and 41 Municipal Councils, in addition to Nagar Panchayats, are scheduled for December 21, with the counting of votes occurring the same day.
Of the 37,32,636 registered voters, 19,55,888 are men, 17,76,544 are women, and 204 are classified as others. Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. using EVMs, with the votes being counted at the polling stations.
