Chandigarh, April 23 (NationPress) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday to evaluate the security measures in the state, particularly following the Pahalgam terror attack. He emphasized the need for robust security protocols at all religious and public spaces throughout the state.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from both the police and civil administration.
In a post on X, Mann stated, "We will not permit any compromise with national security. Strong security measures have been implemented at all religious and public locations in the state."
He further noted, "The deployment of security personnel has been enhanced in educational institutions. It is our duty to ensure the safe return of Punjabis stranded in Jammu and Kashmir, and we are in constant contact with the Jammu and Kashmir Police. The safety of the people of Punjab is our utmost priority."
Punjab has an extensive border with Jammu and an international boundary with Pakistan. Despite facing numerous challenges, including adverse weather and smuggling issues, the BSF remains committed to securing the borders round the clock.
The Pahalgam terror attack, described as the most lethal incident in the valley since the 2019 Pulwama bombing, coincided with the visit of US Vice President J.D. Vance to India and the start of the tourist and trekking season.
On Tuesday, at least 26 tourists lost their lives when armed assailants opened fire on civilians in Baisaran, Jammu and Kashmir. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of heavily armed terrorists emerged from adjacent forests and indiscriminately targeted civilians, predominantly tourists.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi on Wednesday morning after shortening his trip to Saudi Arabia in response to the terror attack. He had a brief meeting with NSA Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri at the airport. PM Modi condemned the terror attack vigorously, asserting that those responsible will be held accountable and reiterating India’s "unwavering" commitment to combat terrorism.
