Chandigarh, April 22 (NationPress) In an innovative initiative, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced on Tuesday significant alterations to the childcare leave regulations in the state, offering essential flexibility and increased support to parents, particularly fathers, and caregivers of children with severe disabilities.
He stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, these modifications are aimed at meeting the changing needs of working parents, especially those encountering unique childcare difficulties.
Previously, the childcare leave policy was applicable exclusively to female government employees caring for minor children under the age of 18.
“Although this initiative provided crucial assistance to working mothers, it overlooked the various family structures and specific obstacles faced by single fathers and parents of children with severe disabilities,” Harpal Singh Cheema noted in a statement.
Recognizing these shortcomings, the Punjab government has introduced two significant changes to the current regulations.
“Firstly, childcare leave benefits have now been extended to single male parents, including widowers, divorced fathers, and unmarried fathers. Secondly, the government has relaxed the upper age limit of 18 years for 40 percent of children with severe disabilities,” he elaborated.
Harpal Singh Cheema mentioned that this amendment addresses the challenges faced by parents of children diagnosed with conditions such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, chronic neurological disorders, severe and profound intellectual disabilities, multiple sclerosis, and various disabilities, including speech, hearing, and visual impairments.
This move also acknowledges the crucial role that fathers play in childcare, ensuring they receive equal support to balance their professional obligations with parental responsibilities.
By granting this leave to single fathers, the government reinforces its commitment to gender-inclusive policies that reflect the realities of contemporary families, Harpal Singh Cheema emphasized.
He highlighted that these amendments symbolize the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government’s dedication to nurturing a work environment that prioritizes employee well-being and inclusivity.
