Punjab Police ASI Jasbir Singh Discusses Thwarting Attack on Sukhbir Badal

New Delhi, Dec 4 (NationPress) The President of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Sukhbir Singh Badal, narrowly escaped an attempted assassination at the Golden Temple on Wednesday when an individual attempted to open fire on him. The threat was averted by Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police, Jasbir Singh, who indicated that senior officers had alerted them regarding such a risk.

ASI Jasbir Singh, who was assigned to duty alongside Sukhbir Badal, played an instrumental role in preventing the attack.

Elaborating on the incident, ASI Jasbir stated, "I was on duty with sir. Previously, senior officers had advised us to remain vigilant due to the possibility of unwanted individuals attempting to incite chaos. Given the sanctity of Darbar Sahib, we couldn’t conduct thorough checks or restrict access, allowing the assailant to enter with a pistol."

"As soon as he brandished the firearm, I stepped in to stop him. Others quickly assisted in overpowering him, leading to his arrest and the confiscation of the weapon," the officer recounted.

The ex-Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, who was situated near the temple entrance donned in a blue 'sewadar' attire and wielding a spear, quickly took cover as the assailant drew a weapon. The shooter was promptly subdued by the courageous policeman and bystanders, leading to his arrest.

Footage of the occurrence depicts the wheelchair-bound Sukhbir Badal ducking as the assailant revealed his firearm. The swift actions of temple officials and security personnel, notably ASI Jasbir Singh, averted a significant disaster.

The assailant has been identified as Narain Singh Chaura, reportedly a former militant with a history of numerous cases and has been in hiding for years.

Police reports indicate that Chaura crossed into Pakistan in 1984 and played a key role in smuggling arms and explosives into Punjab during the early stages of militancy. He is purportedly linked to the Khalistan Liberation Force and the Akal Federation.

The suspect is currently in custody, with investigations ongoing to uncover the motive behind the attack. Further information is awaited.
