Chandigarh, March 1 (NationPress) In a significant operation against trans-border drug trafficking in Punjab, the police from the Amritsar Commissionerate have detained two individuals involved in smuggling and seized 4 kg of heroin from them, as reported by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Saturday.

The arrested suspects have been named as Karanpal Singh (37) and Ranjit Singh (36), both residents of border villages in the Khem Karan jurisdiction within Tarn Taran district.

In addition to the significant drug seizure, law enforcement has also confiscated the motorcycle they were using.

DGP Yadav stated that initial inquiries suggest that a notorious smuggler based in Pakistan utilized the Ferozepur sector to transport these narcotics via drone.

Ongoing investigations aim to uncover both the supply and distribution networks linked to this case, he noted.

Commissioner of Police (Amritsar) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar detailed the operation, revealing that acting on credible intelligence, a police team led by ADCP (Investigation) Navjot Singh, ACP (Detective) Harminder Singh, and ACP (Narcotic) Lalit Sharma executed a special operation and intercepted the suspects at a checkpoint on Jhabal Road in Amritsar, recovering the heroin.

After obtaining drug consignments from across the border, the accused were allegedly selling them to local drug dealers for distribution throughout the state.

The Commissioner of Police stressed that a thorough investigation is being conducted to reveal the entire narcotics supply chain, encompassing suppliers, dealers, and users.

Efforts are also underway to ascertain the total volume of drugs acquired and distributed by the suspects, he added.

In a commitment to combating the drug crisis, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced on Friday that police officials, deputy commissioners, and senior superintendents are tasked with rendering Punjab drug-free within three months.

He declared that the government would establish specialized courts to expedite drug case trials and ensure the conviction of offenders.

CM Mann remarked that the Punjab Police has a rich and commendable history of addressing challenging law and order situations, expressing optimism that the force would continue this tradition with the community's active involvement.

He assured that there would be no shortage of resources and pledged complete support to law enforcement and civil authorities in this initiative.

The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of implementing preventive strategies in educational institutions to protect Punjab's youth from the drug epidemic.

He reiterated that the drug supply chain must be halted, and those involved in trafficking should face justice.
