Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, Jan 23 (NationPress) In light of the intensified security measures in Punjab to facilitate smooth Republic Day celebrations, as directed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) of Amritsar has successfully thwarted a potential attack targeting a security establishment. This operation was linked to a terror module associated with the banned organization Babbbar Khalsa International (BKI), as stated by the Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Friday.
The suspect identified as Sharanpreet Singh, hailing from Dinewal village in Tarn Taran, was apprehended during the operation.
Police recovered one P86 hand grenade, a 9mm Glock pistol along with five cartridges, and 65 grams of ICE drug from his possession.
DGP Yadav mentioned that initial investigations indicated the accused was acting under the instructions of foreign-based BKI operatives Nishan Singh (alias Nishan Jaurrian), Adeshbir Singh (alias Adesh Jamarai), and Simranjit Singh (alias Simma Deol), who are known to be orchestrating terror activities in Punjab aimed at instilling fear and chaos.
The DGP further added that ongoing investigations aim to establish connections related to this case.
Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) (SSOC), Sukhminder Singh Mann, elaborated that the arrest of Sharanpreet Singh stemmed from an intelligence-driven operation. The police team apprehended him at Bundala Morh on the Amritsar-Tarn Taran highway, recovering a Glock pistol, ammunition, and the ICE drug.
During thorough questioning, Sharanpreet Singh revealed that his handlers had recently arranged for a hand grenade's delivery, which he had hidden near a church along the Amritsar-Tarn Taran highway. Following his guidance, police swiftly located and retrieved the P86 hand grenade.
The AIG stated that investigations disclosed that Sharanpreet Singh became involved in this network through his cousin Simma Deol. Acting on their directives, the accused had been responsible for transporting explosives, weapons, and handling illicit funds.
