Has Punjab Failed to Deliver the Required 100 Days of Employment Under MGNREGA?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, Dec 31 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, has not fulfilled the mandated provision of 100 days of employment under MGNREGA for millions of individuals from marginalized and underprivileged backgrounds over the last four years, as asserted by BJP state working President Ashwani Sharma on Wednesday.
According to Sharma, this failure has not only deprived people of their promised employment but has also robbed the poor of their basic sustenance, thereby impacting their dignity and self-worth. He highlighted that during the recent special Assembly session, the Speaker allocated minimal time, which was frequently interrupted by ruling party members.
“Consequently, he organized a press conference on December 29 to share information about significant issues regarding MGNREGA. As anticipated, the Chief Minister did not address these inquiries,” Sharma stated.
Sharma raised critical questions to the Chief Minister, including: When the central government allocates funds for 100 days of work for each worker in Punjab, why is the state unable to provide the full 100 days?
The BJP representative also inquired why mandatory social audits under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) have not been executed in 6,095 gram panchayats for 2024-25 and 7,389 gram panchayats for 2025-26, questioning what corruption is being concealed.
He further asked why no actions have been taken regarding 10,653 corruption cases identified by the Special Audit Unit and why those responsible are being shielded.
Sharma stated that MGNREGA workers and their associations have consistently accused Aam Aadmi Party MLAs, MPs, and local leaders of corruption involvement. Nonetheless, the government’s and the Chief Minister’s lack of action clearly indicates that through corruption in MGNREGA, AAP leaders and lawmakers have deprived the poor of their livelihoods.
