Bhubaneswar, June 29 (NationPress) Following the tragic stampede in Puri that resulted in the loss of three lives, the Odisha Government took swift action by suspending Puri District Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal. Additionally, two senior police officials have also been suspended for failing in their duties.
In a statement released by the Chief Minister’s Office after a high-level meeting, Chanchal Rana, the Collector of Khordha, has been appointed as the new Puri Collector, while Pinak Mishra, the DIGP of the Special Task Force of Odisha Police, will take over as the SP.
The DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhee face suspensions due to negligence.
In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a Rs 25 lakh ex-gratia for the families of the deceased devotees.
An administrative inquiry into this unfortunate incident has been ordered, overseen by Anu Garg, the Development Commissioner of Odisha.
“The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath embodies the pride of the Odia community. Any form of negligence will not be tolerated, and strict action will be taken against those responsible,” asserted CM Majhi.

After the stampede, which occurred between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., CM Majhi expressed his sincerest apologies to the devotees of Lord Jagannath and ordered an immediate investigation into the security failures.
“My government and I seek forgiveness from all Jagannath devotees,” he shared on his official X account.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims identified as Pravati Das, Premkant Mohanty, and Basanti Sahoo, praying for the strength of the bereaved.
