Ranchi, Aug 5 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is scheduled to appear before the MP-MLA Special Court in Chaibasa, Jharkhand, on Wednesday, August 6, regarding a defamation lawsuit filed against him.
This case stems from his purportedly derogatory statements directed at the then President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Amit Shah.
A resident of Chaibasa, Pratap Katiyar, lodged the complaint on July 9, 2018.
As per the petition, during a Congress plenary meeting earlier that year, Rahul Gandhi allegedly stated, "No murderer can become the National President in the Congress party. Congressmen cannot accept a murderer as their leader. This is possible only in the BJP."
The complainant asserts that this statement was a clear reference to Amit Shah and amounted to defamation.
Following the complaint, the Chaibasa court issued a bailable warrant against Rahul Gandhi in April 2022. However, the Congress leader did not respond to the summons.
In February 2024, the court escalated the situation by issuing a non-bailable warrant due to his ongoing absence.
Rahul Gandhi's legal team had requested an exemption from personal appearance, which the Chaibasa court denied. Subsequently, he appealed to the Jharkhand High Court, which granted temporary relief and suspended the warrant for several months.
In March 2024, the High Court concluded the petition, allowing the case to continue in the lower court.
Once the case returned to the Chaibasa court, Gandhi’s legal representatives sought exemption once more, but the court rejected the request.
With the court emphasizing his presence, Rahul Gandhi is now anticipated to attend in person on August 6, in compliance with the latest directive from the MP-MLA Special Court.
