New Delhi, March 10 (NationPress) Shortly after the Rajya Sabha resumed its session for the second consecutive day, the chamber erupted in chaos surrounding the ongoing SIR initiative, which is currently being implemented in states gearing up for elections. This incident featured a heated exchange between the Leader of Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, and House Chairman, C.P. Radhakrishnan.

Kharge asserted that the SIR undertaking, presented under the guise of voter verification, is riddled with numerous irregularities and unethical practices, which prompted an immediate rebuttal from the Chairman, who dismissed the allegations.

As Kharge passionately labeled SIR a “fraud,” members of Congress rallied around him, echoing his assertions.

Radhakrishnan quickly countered, stating, “In Tamil Nadu, that is not the case,” and denied Kharge the opportunity to elaborate on his ‘unverified’ claims.

As both figures attempted to assert their positions, the Upper House descended into disarray with Congress representatives chanting slogans in support of Kharge, thereby disrupting the proceedings. The Chairman, however, remained steadfast, denying permission for such displays.

Criticizing the government and the Election Commission, Kharge declared, “What Derek O’Brien brought up in the House is crucial. There is widespread fraud occurring through SIR to manipulate elections, including in Tamil Nadu, Bengal, and other regions.”

Radhakrishnan refuted Kharge’s assertions, insisting, “Look at the situation in Bengal. Your statement is factually incorrect.”

Kharge persisted, chanting “Fraud, fraud, fraud,” supported by the uproar of party members, to which Radhakrishnan retorted, “I will not permit it.”

Previously, Trinamool MP Derek O’Brien had raised concerns regarding SIR, stating that it represented not electoral reform but a severe infringement on citizens’ rights under the pretext of a voter verification initiative. He also criticized the Chief Election Commissioner, labeling the individual responsible for this operation as “highly unreliable.”

The ongoing SIR initiative, affecting several states including those in the electoral fray like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, has incited strong opposition from Congress and the INDIA Bloc, who perceive this as an Election Commission strategy to benefit the ruling BJP.

Point of View

The ongoing debate regarding the SIR initiative underscores significant concerns over electoral integrity in India. While allegations of fraud are serious, they also highlight the contentious political climate as parties prepare for upcoming elections.
