A stampede-like situation broke out on Tuesday evening, 24 June at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) International Stadium in Dhurwa, Ranchi, during the final T-20 match of the Jharkhand Premier League (JPL), leaving several spectators injured — three of them seriously. Jharkhand Minister Irfan Ansari swiftly alerted the Health Department and assured the public that proper medical arrangements were in place.

How the Incident Unfolded

According to eyewitnesses, a large number of cricket enthusiasts had begun arriving at the stadium in the afternoon ahead of the high-profile final. Just before the match was set to begin, the crowd surged sharply at the West Gate. Slow entry procedures and delays in security checks created long queues, and as the pressure of incoming spectators mounted, pushing and jostling broke out near the gate — triggering the stampede-like chaos.

Frustration among attendees over the disorder reportedly led some to attempt to breach the security cordon. In the process, parts of the West Gate and the barricading were damaged. Police and administrative officials rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident and worked to bring the crowd under control. Additional security forces were subsequently deployed in the area.

Injured Spectators and Hospital Response

Several people sustained injuries in the incident. Three of them — described by officials as a young man and two young women — were shifted to Raj Hospital in Ranchi for treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that all three are currently undergoing medical care. The remaining injured were provided on-site assistance by ambulances that reached the venue.

What the Government Said

Taking to his official X account on Tuesday evening, Minister Irfan Ansari wrote: 'Necessary instructions have been issued to the Civil Surgeon and relevant officials. Ambulances have reached the spot in time, and all the injured are being provided with prompt medical assistance. Hospitals have also been alerted for the better treatment of the injured.'

In the same post, Ansari added: 'I myself am continuously monitoring the situation, and the Health Department is fully engaged in relief and treatment efforts with utmost readiness.' He urged the public not to panic, stating that swift arrangements had been ensured for all injured persons.

Inquiry Ordered, Security Tightened

The district administration confirmed that an inquiry has been ordered into the sequence of events that led to the stampede-like situation. Security arrangements at the stadium have since been further tightened. The incident has raised serious questions about crowd management protocols and entry procedures at large public sporting events in the state.

As the JPL final — one of the most watched domestic cricket events in Jharkhand — drew a massive turnout, the failure of gate management infrastructure to handle the surge has come under scrutiny. Authorities are expected to review ticketing, entry flow, and security deployment ahead of future events at the venue.
