Kochi, Sep 10 (NationPress) The Malayalam rapper Hiran Das Murali, widely recognized as Vedan, faced arrest on Wednesday concerning a rape allegation.
Given that he had previously obtained anticipatory bail from the Kerala High Court, his arrest was merely procedural. Following the completion of legal protocols, Vedan is expected to be released from the police station later today.
He secured this anticipatory bail in connection with accusations of rape tied to a false promise of marriage.
On August 27, the Kerala High Court granted him conditional bail, mandating his presence before the investigative team for a two-day period commencing Tuesday.
He was released on Tuesday after five hours of questioning but was instructed to return on Wednesday.
During the interrogation on Wednesday, his arrest was officially documented.
Post-arrest, the police will conduct the standard medical examination before releasing him back into the community.
The charges were brought forth by a physician who claims that she and Vedan developed a relationship via Instagram starting in 2021. She alleges that he assured her of marriage and engaged in intimate relations on multiple occasions across locations including Kozhikode and Kochi between 2021 and 2023.
The complainant further stated that they cohabited briefly and that she financially supported him, covering expenses for his debut album and travel.
Represented by legal counsel, the complainant contested the bail request, asserting that Vedan had similarly misled other young women.
Nonetheless, the court emphasized that each case should be evaluated independently.
Vedan's attorney responded by asserting that their relationship was consensual, initiated by the complainant reaching out to him as a fan, and claimed the complaint stemmed from personal conflicts.
Previously, the police had issued a lookout notice for Vedan, concerned he might try to flee the country due to his previous evasiveness since the allegations arose.
Interestingly, following this case's registration, additional allegations from other women also surfaced. However, the court clarified that other accusations against him were not relevant to the current bail petition.
This week, a local court also granted him anticipatory bail concerning a similar case initiated by another woman.
