Should Chandni Chowk in Delhi Be Renamed to 'Sis Ganj'?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, Nov 5 (NationPress) Punjab BJP leader and party spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal has reached out to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta via a letter, advocating for the renaming of the iconic Chandni Chowk area to 'Sis Ganj' in honor of the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur.
Additionally, he proposed that nearby metro stations be dedicated to the esteemed martyrs -- Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das, and Bhai Dyal -- who made the ultimate sacrifice alongside Guru Teg Bahadur.
In his correspondence, Baliawal expressed that on this sacred occasion of Guru Nanak Dev's 556th birth anniversary, he was writing with profound respect as both a Sikh and an Indian to acknowledge the extraordinary sacrifice of Guru Teg Bahadur -- the Hind Di Chadar, who laid down his life in defense of religious freedom and the conscience of humanity.
He recounted that during the Mughal reign under Aurangzeb in 1675, religious persecution was rampant, with temples being demolished, scriptures burned, and innocent individuals coerced into conversion.
Over 500 Kashmiri Pandits, led by Pandit Kirpa Ram, sought refuge for their faith from Guru Teg Bahadur at Sri Anandpur Sahib. Moved by their plight, Guru Sahib decided to make the ultimate sacrifice for truth and the principle of 'Sarbat da Bhala'.
Guru Teg Bahadur, alongside his companions Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das, and Bhai Dyal, was taken to Delhi, where they endured horrific torture. Bhai Mati Das was sawed alive, Bhai Sati Das was wrapped in cotton and set ablaze, and Bhai Dyal was boiled.
Ultimately, Guru Teg Bahadur was beheaded at the location where Gurdwara Sri Sis Ganj Sahib now stands, a site that continues to represent courage, sacrifice, and the defense of religious liberty.
BJP leader Baliawal emphasized that renaming Chandni Chowk to 'Sis Ganj' and dedicating nearby metro stations to these martyrs would serve as more than just an administrative act; it would be a historic homage to India's values of tolerance, bravery, and freedom of faith.
He stated, 'Every individual passing through this hallowed ground would be reminded that this is the land where a head was offered for truth, but the truth itself was never compromised.'
Baliawal further asserted that such a decision under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's guidance would instill pride and reverence among crores of Sikhs and Indians globally, sending a powerful message of unity and respect across faiths.
He urged the CM to reflect on the proposal with the necessary sensitivity and seriousness.
'Renaming Chandni Chowk as Sis Ganj would immortalize the spirit of Guru Teg Bahadur-ji’s martyrdom and remind future generations that India stands resilient because of those who chose sacrifice over silence,' Baliawal concluded.
