Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, April 8 (NationPress) The Commissionerate Police apprehended a retired government official on Wednesday in connection with the fatal stabbing of his wife at their residence in Swastik Nagar, located in Kuha village under the jurisdiction of the Airfield police station in Bhubaneswar.
The suspect, Debaraj Sarangi, aged 62, was previously a senior accountant at the AG Office and had retired approximately two years ago. Originally from Nayagarh district, he had been living with his 55-year-old spouse, Priyamvada, in Swastik Nagar.
According to police reports, on that fateful Wednesday, an intense argument escalated into a physical altercation when Sarangi, reportedly under mental strain, insisted on leaving the home, a decision his wife opposed.
In a sudden outburst of anger, Sarangi first struck Priyamvada with his fists before launching a knife attack, repeatedly stabbing her in the face and neck, which led to her tragic demise.
Following the incident, Sarangi gave his daughter, who resides with her in-laws in the Patrapada area, some cash and gold ornaments belonging to the victim.
Afterward, he surrendered at the Airfield police station, admitting to the murder.
His daughter, Arpita, shared with reporters that her father had been battling a liver infection for the past six months and that his diabetes had recently exacerbated, contributing to significant weight loss and constant worry about his health. She mentioned that she had attempted to comfort him just the day before, assuring him of a potential recovery.
Investigators confirmed that Sarangi had long been suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, and liver issues, leading to severe mental depression. Reports indicated that prior to the incident, he experienced insomnia and was under considerable psychological stress, ultimately resulting in his violent actions.
After his confession and subsequent arrest, Sarangi was brought before a court where he was remanded into judicial custody.
